Alexey Venetsianov is a famous Russian painter. Surprising is the fact that not having received an art education, he managed to become an influential artist and even create his own direction in painting. Peasant life was of interest to artists before, but it was Venetsianov who began to portray peasants with love and tenderness. The life of the peasants, the master transfers the hard work to the canvas in detail.

One of Venetsianov’s paintings of peasant subjects “Peasant children in the field”. The plot is simple, unpretentious, is a normal daily situation - two girls bring lunch to a shepherd working in the field. On the canvas, a summer day appears before the viewer. A classic rural landscape comes to mind: the lush green of the field stretching into the distance, the horizon line overgrown with trees, and the soft blue, almost transparent sky.

Children's figures are written in large, they are close to the front frame of the canvas. The children are dressed poorly, but neatly and cleanly: light gray clothes are belted with a thin belt, on the girls' heads there are shawls of blue and bright blue colors. Shod children in simple bast shoes. The relationship between the children, clearly visible tenderness and love, attract and captivate the viewer. The eldest girl timidly, shyly holds out the bread to the shepherd. The second girl, standing behind her, gently hugs the second by the shoulder and puts her head on it. Girls have baskets in their hands, which speaks of their tireless work and help to their parents. The expression on their faces is serene.

The landscape around is also calm, as if breathing serenity. Only a few sheep from the herd violate this silence. Despite the commonality of the events described on the canvas, and their regularity, the whole picture leaves an unusually warm impression, with its lyricism it penetrates directly into the soul. The painting, written in the 1820s, is stored in the St. Petersburg Museum.
