When Santi wrote Madonna and Child, he was almost seventeen years old. Therefore, in this picture there is still not that classical beauty, that splendor and pictorial performance, for which the later works of the master were famous. But in the chamber and modest "Madonna and Child" there are other qualities that give her an elegant look.

The main feature of the picture is subtle lyricism, which permeates the whole picture. It is visible as in the image of the Madonna - a very young and, childishly, naive facial features of a girl. And also in the virgin landscape, which gently spread out behind her. Spring mood reigns in everything, everything turns green and buds open, as signs of a new life.

The main feature in the appearance of the Madonna is her brooding clarity of features; the same mood hovers around her. By its chamber character, this picture resembles a miniature for book editions. Having chosen the circle as the form of his work, Raphael naturally builds the composition in a limited space.

The girl fits harmoniously into this framework. The rounded shape of which perfectly emphasizes the smoothness of the lines of the shoulder of the Madonna, the head covered with a coverlet, the lines of the second shoulder. The figure of the girl is located strictly in the center. The body of the child is located under the same slope as the head of the mother.

Thanks to this technique, the artist was able to harmoniously combine these two persons into a single composition. The child is trying to play, but his mother is passionate about reading, which also interested the baby, so they are both turned towards the book. The impression of an ideal world and peace.

It should also be noted that the frame of the picture is also made according to the drawing of the artist himself. These are grotesque ornaments; black and gold colors are in the mix. Gilded frame, made in low relief with wood carvings.
